Local and regional residents welcomed in the new year at the 36th Annual Penguin Plunge on Jan. 1 at 17th Street beach in Del Mar. Lifeguards organized the first plunge in 1986 as a way for community members to meet city staff and to remind the public that lifeguards provide their dedicated service 365 days a year.
